I decided to give myself a project by combining my love of the 80s and discovering new music. And quite a project it was! Over a year
in the making. I exclusively used the site eMusic for all the tracks found here. Starting with 1980 and going forward I listened to samples
from every album in the Alternative/Punk/Pop/Rock categories or about 400 albums per year. When I say "every album" I mean every
artist that I've NEVER heard of. Keep in mind I have over 800 records from the this period so I consider myself well knowledged in this
area.
Do you remember the first time you heard The Smiths, or Blondie, or Devo, or Bob Dylan? That was a pretty amazing experience. For this project I got to have that "first time" experience 590 times! That's right there are 590 artists here (no repeats) that you have probably never heard of. Now you get to have hundreds of magical "first time" experiences. You lucky son-of-a-bitch!
I had to go to Wikipedia many times to find out who these bands were. Some are from other countries so it makes sense that I hadn't heard of them. For whatever reason there are bands that never got much if any airplay so if you didn't live in their town you would not have heard them even if they did have one or several records out. These are the bands and artists I discovered.
There are some pretty great songs in here whether your preference is pop, rock, new wave, metal, punk, folk, rock-a-billy - I'm certain you will discover some sweet chestnuts as I have. Enjoy!
